What are Sealants?
Sealants are thin protective coatings that are applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. They form a barrier between your tooth and any bacteria and plaque in the mouth, and can last for up to three years. Not only can sealants help to prevent cavities, but they can help to prevent deep staining. Sealants are ideal for both pediatric and adult patients who need an extra layer of protection from cavities.
Why are Sealants needed?
You might need sealants because you’re prone to tooth decay and already have a lot of cavities or fillings. For children with poor eating and hygiene habits, sealants can protect the back teeth from future damage and decay. You might even choose to get sealants as a way to protect your teeth and prevent staining. Sealants are completely clear, so no one else will know they’re on your teeth but the dental team.
Who is a good candidate for Sealants?
We can examine your teeth to determine if and when you might need sealants. We often recommend them to children who don’t have the best eating and brushing habits, or to adults who already have quite a lot of fillings on their back teeth. Sealants are only applied to the back teeth, so having them placed is not an excuse to not brush and floss your teeth. It is important that you brush and floss your teeth daily even with sealants in place.
What happen when sealants are placed?
We will start by thoroughly cleaning and drying the teeth where the sealants will be placed. Next, a solution is applied to the teeth which will help the sealants adhere properly to the surface of the teeth. The sealants will be painted onto the teeth, and then will be cured with a light to harden the material, keeping it in place. You will be able to leave the office with the comfort of knowing that your teeth will be better protected from decay.
